'The Oldest Road'. How old is the Ridgeway? We will probably never know when mankind first stated to beat this track across the top of the hills. One thing is for certain the road is designed to give the traveller good warning in the event of an attack. This was a road used in unsettled times, when neighbouring tribes fought often and travel was perilous.
